Sometimes the best examples are those made by idiots. When one local artist was interviewed by our paper, he not only shot himself in the foot by alienating most of the community but may have damaged the saleability of other artists’ works as well. While he talks about paying homage to the masters, perhaps he should have paid more attention to their actions and advice before opening his mouth and inserting both feet. His story should serve as a cautionary tale for all artists and people who are selling creative works.

When it comes to selling crafts in person, there’s not really a set list of things crafters should always do. Opinions vary greatly on everything from display design to pricing to dealing with customers. I’ve been to shows around the country where craft show vendors really have the whole package when it comes to selling their wares. Unfortunately, I’ve seen more artisans and crafters, who are not putting their best foot forward, but with a little effort could really elevate their game.
I’m not saying that I have all the answers. But, I do hope that by sharing some of my thoughts and observations that people, who are selling their creations, can be more effective and garner the best possible prices for their items.
Discussions cover everything from pricing to dealing with other vendors. I hope to foster conversations where ideas can flourish and artisans and crafters can come to consider Blog About Crafts a great resource of information for selling their handmade items in person.
